MODERN MUSIC VIDEOS: FIVE OF THE BEST DOING THE ROUNDS RIGHT NOW
March 12th 2009 07:38
Music video direction is a sometimes forgotten about corner of the film industry, and yet so many directors and producers get their start agreeing to shoot the video production of their best mate’s brother’s flatmate’s band’s first song. Some directors use the medium as a stepping-stone to make the jump to feature films, while others perfect their artistry, in the process creating memorable slices of celluloid that will be revisited for years to come. With this is mind, Screentrek takes a look at five of the best video clips currently doing the rounds on both music television and the internet.
Blame Ringo – Garble Arch
Directed by Daniel Brumm
Simplicity is key as Brisbane, Australia-based pop group and serial Richard Starkey Jr. haters, Blame Ringo, pluck their quietly sublime Garble Arch to a day in the life of London’s infamous Abbey Road pedestrian crossing.
Brendan Canning – Love is New
Directed by Shelly Lewis
Director Shelly Lewis takes a trick or two from Wes Anderson in this oddball yet perfectly framed visual riposte to Brendan Canning’s fuzzed-out funk rock.
Empire of the Sun – We Are the People
Directed by Josh Logue
This sun-blasted piece of photography plays like Anton Corbijn on uppers and hitting a round or two of Little Big Planet. Empire of the Sun are writing some of the catchiest indie electro this side of MGMT and in this Josh Logue-directed clip they have a gleaming visual touch point to help propel their sonic brilliance.
Rex the Dog – Bubblicious
Directed by Geoffroy De Crecy
A lesson on how not to take your own art too seriously. Rex the Dog, Partizan Lab and De Crecy may have eschewed flashy production techniques but they paid more than the going interest rate in time spent and careful planning. The result is one of the most brilliantly enjoyable music videos doing the rounds right now.
Kid Cudi – Day n Night
Directed by So Me
Perhaps the best animation/live action mash-up since A-ha’s Take On Me and not an eardrum destroying squeal to be heard. Cleveland, Ohio rapper Kid Cudi deploys a beautifully understated rap and director So Me rolls out some luscious film stock that lends proceedings an eerily over saturated early-80s feel. Brilliant stuff.
