THE DE LOREAN LIVES!

De Lorean Back to the future

If you’re talking cinematic icons, they rarely come greater than the De Lorean. Bob Zemeckis is an endlessly talented filmmaker, and his penchant for a cracking story was matched by some truly innovative production design in Back to the Future. When you watched the film as a kid you wanted a De Lorean, particularly if it was laying down trails of fire and coming back from its travels along the time-space continuum covered in ice.

But two years before the film’s release the De Lorean Motor Company was out of business, the car touted as a flop by the motoring press and its inventor arrested on charges of drug trafficking. The De Lorean dream was all but over.

Well, almost. When the company folded it left a massive inventory, which sat gathering dust in an Ohio warehouse until being purchased in 1997 by US-based English mechanic, Stephen Wynn.

Wynn used 55-trailer loads to shift everything to his own facility on the outskirts of Houston, Texas, and he and his people set to work making the car right. The engine was upgraded, the suspension reworked and the chassis rebuilt with stainless steel. Using his team’s modern techniques, Wynn slowly transformed the De Lorean, turning it from a mangy dog into a crested stallion.

And now you can buy one! Wynn’s facility has started doubling as a showroom for the 80s super car, and it’s sure to be gull-winged, angular heaven for anybody who can make it along to take a peak. Of course, nothing’s different on the outside; Wynn and his team know they’re working on an icon. But on the inside it’s all change, so don’t expect to be able to play The Power of Love on the cassette deck – iPods only, my friend.

Check out the rebooted De Lorean Motor Company here!
